Description
Experience Zimbabwe through its food and people. Join your local host in her Bulawayo home for a traditional home-cooked meal, discover local dishes and ingredients, and hear the stories and traditions behind them. Leave the restaurant behind and take a seat at the family table, where your host will welcome you with traditional Zimbabwean hospitality and a home-cooked meal inspired by the foods she grew up eating. Begin with a refreshing taste of mahewu, a traditional cereal-based drink, before discovering a selection of familiar local foods and ingredients. Your main meal may include freshly prepared isitshwala (sadza), traditional chicken or beef stew, imifino/muriwo (leafy greens), sugar beans, and seasonal vegetables. Depending on availability, you'll also have the opportunity to taste other local specialties, including amacimbi (mopane worms) for those who would like to try them. As you eat, your host will share stories about the foods of Bulawayo, Matabeleland, and Zimbabwe. Discover the importance of maize and sadza, learn about traditional methods of preparing and preserving food, and hear how food forms part of family gatherings, celebrations, and everyday life. You'll also learn how Zimbabwean food and lifestyles have changed between generations and hear personal stories about the dishes your host grew up eating and preparing. There will be an opportunity to see how sadza is prepared, learn how Zimbabweans traditionally eat it, and perhaps even try eating it with your hands. Most importantly, this is a relaxed experience. Ask questions, share stories, enjoy the food, and get to know a little more about everyday life in Zimbabwe from someone who calls Bulawayo home. Finish your visit with tea or coffee and conversation around the table.Includes
