The Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary

Zimbabwe

Tours Conservation

Twala is a haven for a large variety of rescued animals and birds. Run by Trustees Sarah Carter and veterinarian Dr Vinay Ramlaul, it is a non-profit organisation focusing on the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals and birds, as well as conservation education and animal welfare issues affecting the surrounding community. A free rural vet service is run from Twala, vaccinating, sterilising, treating and feeding up to fifty dogs from low-income families each week.

Twala is home to everything from lions to ostriches, serval cats, primates, reptiles, raptors and many other small mammals. All the animals and birds have been rescued. There is no breeding or buying or selling of animals. Rescues are released back into the wild wherever possible but many animals will remain in the care of the dedicated Twala team for the rest of their lives. Habitats for the animals are spacious and the emphasis is on providing the very best quality of life possible for the animals. This makes for a happy, tranquil atmosphere where you will meet animals that are clearly loved and nurtured.

Twala is open to visitors by prior booking only. There are peaceful picnic spots in the lush gardens, where duikers, tortoises, baby monkeys, Harriet the serval and other rescued animals roam free. The gardens overlook a picturesque dam and indigenous woodland. There is bream fishing available and a children's swimming pool.

Guided tours of the sanctuary are available at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. Lion feeding is at 4 pm every day. There is a bustling farmyard where children can feed the birds, sheep and other rescued creatures.

Twala is open from Wednesday to Sunday and on all public holidays except Christmas Day.

It's all self-catering. Braai stands are available but you need to bring wood or charcoal. The coffee shop serves soft drinks and cakes only.

Entry $12 for adults and $7 for children including a guided tour of the sanctuary and complimentary tea and coffee.

Payment can be by Swipe our office at the Twenty Four Hour Vet Surgery on Sam Njoma and Upper East Road or by RTGS, Ecocash, Zapper or cash on arrival.
Bookings on 0774312887 or 0716801327.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at Twala.
