Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water in the world, measuring 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) wide and 108 meters (354 ft) high. The Zambezi River flows over a basalt plateau, forming a vertical drop into the First Gorge, which ranges from 80 to 108 meters deep. The falls are divided by two main islands: Boaruka Island to the west and Livingstone Island near the center.
The main streams of the falls from west to east are the Devil’s Cataract, the Main Falls, Rainbow Falls (the highest), and the Eastern Cataract. Seasonal changes affect the falls’ appearance: during the rainy season (late November to early April) and peak flood (February to May), the spray can reach over 400 meters (1,300 ft) and obscure parts of the falls. Dry season conditions (September to January) reveal more rock face and allow unique walking opportunities along the crest and gorge.
