Description
This tour offers an exceptional wildlife experience along the extensive waterways and islands of the Zambezi River. The river system supports numerous bird species, including White-faced Whistling-Duck, Egyptian Goose, Spur-Winged Goose, Water Thick-knee, Blacksmith Lapwing, African Openbill, Yellow-billed Stork, African Darter, Goliath Heron, various egrets, African Sacred Ibis, Hadada Ibis, African Fish-Eagle, and Pied Kingfisher.
Unique to this area are rarer species such as the African Finfoot, typically found along riverbank branches. Other elusive birds include White-backed Night-Heron, Half-collared Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, Rock Pratincole, African Skimmer, Collared Pratincole, and Black-winged Pratincole, the latter two being seasonal migrants from Europe.
Additional chances exist to see Pel’s Fishing-owl, as well as rare birds of prey like Osprey, Banded Snake-Eagle, Bat Hawk (usually at dawn), and Dickinson’s Kestrel. Mammals frequenting the river include hippos, crocodiles, African bush elephants, Cape bushbucks, Impalas, and Waterbucks.
