World's View - Malindidzimu
World’s view is a hill situated in the Matobo National park. It was given the name because Cecil J. Rhodes the British imperialist often visited the site and called it so because of its vantage point where one can see many hills surrounding it and miles of miles of the national park. It was given the name Malindidzimu by locals; it means high place of the midzimu – ancestral spirits. World’s view is where Rhodes was buried, together with two of his friends; Sir Charles Patrick Coghlan and Sir Leander Starr Jameson.
There is a stone monument that was erected to honour 35 British soldiers killed in a battle with the Matebele army; they were thrown in the Shangani River. A small gallery at the site gives a chronology of Rhodes’ life and his exploits as a business man, explorer and politician. The hike to the top of World’s view is not very tough but good sturdy shoes are required. Visitors also have the opportunity to see amazing sunsets from this height. World’s view is a national historical monument and a nominal fee is required to gain access.
