Leon Varley Walking Safaris
Leon Varley is a trained safari guide with a wealth of experience and in-depth knowledge of the African bush. Born and raised in Zimbabwe he has worked in the country for decades and he formed Backpackers Africa with his wife Mags in 1987. Backpackers Africa is a Safari company which promotes exploring Africa through walking safaris. Leon knows Zimbabwe well and is particularly fond of Chizarira National Park in the northern part of the country.
Leon leads walking safaris in Zimbabwe and other selected countries on the continent. The safaris are well-structured trips which give guests the opportunity to see Africa up close, the vegetation, birdlife, insects, wildlife and so on. The safaris are designed to give the full experience and so the groups are small (up to 7 people) and the safaris are flexible in every way and guests can choose from 3 options:
• NORMAL BACKED UP SAFARI – With a support vehicle to carry guests and pick up, at the end
• BACKPACKING SAFARI – Guests carry their own backpack of supplies but there are some service staff that will do the cooking, set up the campsite and carry all the cooking and shelter equipment.
• PORTER SAFARI – This a safari where guests’ backpacks are carried for them
N.B Camp crew will be responsible for cooking, setting up campsites, laundry and other housekeeping tasks. During the safari, guests will sleep in comfortable tent accommodation which comes with beds, linens and a toilet tent.
Besides the interesting activities such as tracking large game, Leon gives interesting talks on various subjects to give guests an enriching context of the safari; these are done in the evenings or when the group takes some time to rest.
